This website, coesclass.blogspot.com, which has been so useful for so many years, will be on hiatus for a while while I take on a new job. Because Mrs. Zanzucchi has accepted the job as principal at Coconino High School, I will serve as interim principal at Marshall Magnet School for the upcoming 2011-2012 school year, pending approval by the FUSD school board at their meeting on July 12.

We're going to be starting several new endeavors in our classroom after Spring Break... Newscasts... Biography Project #3... and Battle Of The Books... to name just a few.

And, of course, AIMS Testing is just around the corner, too.

Needless to say (but I'm going to say it anyway): it's going to be a busy, busy final trimester here in fifth grade!

If you're interested in getting a head-start on things, here are a few things you can do:

Keep looking at the newspaper during the break. Use the Daily Sun's excellent website, or find another source of news that you can use. Newscasts will require you to be on-your-game like never before when it comes to your knowledge of Current Events.

Be thinking about new subjects for your next Biography Project. For Project #3 it will be your task to find a candidate for the Wall Of Greatness and persuade us to vote for them... it's not too early to start looking around for a subject.

Read! Read! Read! Battle Of The Books is an intense competition between teams. It will take the place of the Book Report project this term. We'll all be reading tons of great kid's literature to prepare for The Battle. Want to get started? Awesome! REMINDERS before a long weekend...

Don't forget:

NO SCHOOL on Monday. By the way, it's actually Washington's Birthday... not Presidents' Day... at least not officially.

ALL Book Reports and AR Tests are due Friday, Feb. 25. That's NEXT Friday! Reminders and progress checks were sent home with students today. They are completely up-to-date as-of this morning. Several students have less than the required six (6) Book Reports and/or AR Tests completed. Many, many weeks have transpired since our second trimester Book Reports project was first assigned on November 15, 2010. Including winter vacation, that was over 13 weeks ago.

ALL components for Biography Project #2 are due Monday, Feb. 28. We have now had this assignment packet in-hand for a full week of school. Many students have made good progress toward beginning their research and some have begun working on their first activity or their first draft. Please remember, per the assignment outlined in detail in the project packet, everyone must complete, at the minimum, the 400-600 word written biography and at two (2) of the activities. Students are encouraged to choose to do more than the minimum in order to ensure they get all 100 points. All components are due on the due date.

Permission slips for the upcoming trip to Phoenix to visit the Challenger Center on Thursday, March 3, are due to Mr. Kasch or Mr. Coe ASAP! Parent volunteers/chaperones who would like to accompany us are encouraged to contact Mr. Kasch.

FYI: I will be attending a professional conference in Phoenix on April 27-29. Mrs. Linda Evans will be subbing for me on those dates.

Snowbowl Field-trip Survey

We asked our students to participate in a little homemade survey while we were in the Computer Lab this morning, seeking their reactions and feelings about our field-trip to Snowbowl yesterday. The results were so interesting and compelling, and so many of their written responses were so funny and insightful, we wanted to share them with our parents and other viewers. Enjoy! P.S. Our Ski Trip to Arizona Snowbowl yesterday was awesome! The kids were great. The weather was great. The staff at Snowbowl was great! Even the snow conditions were great. All-around an excellent day!

Except for the part where Raul broke his arm. That part was a drag. Especially for Raul. We all hope he heals well, and fast.

Otherwise, everyone seems to have had a pretty good time. Here's a little video:

We've still got way too many students who have NOT turned in their permissions, fees, and rental agreement forms for our Snowbowl trip NEXT TUESDAY. I plan to drive up our delinquent forms to Snowbowl TOMORROW, Friday afternoon after school. It's REALLY IMPORTANT that I have EVERYONE'S FORMS and RENTAL AGREEMENT paperwork turned in by FRIDAY MORNING. Any forms that aren't turned in by Friday will slow everyone down on Tuesday, especially those whose paperwork is late, who will probably need to be refitted that morning at the rental counter.

We've had a week to get this stuff turned it; it's well-past time to get it DONE. Please.

ALSO: We're still in need of 3 or 4 parent volunteers to accompany us to help in the Lodge after some are done skiing in the afternoon. Please email me, or call (928-788-0881) if you're able to help out.

UPDATE: We're in pretty good shape as far as our upcoming Snowbowl fieldtrip goes. Arizona Snowbowl Ski Rental forms and FUSD permission slips will officially go home later this week. And we've got plenty of skiing-adult/parent volunteers. However, we still have three (3) FREE day passes that we can give away if others are still interested in going with us to help our students ski in the afternoon. Likewise, we're still in need of a few parents to do Lodge Patrol. If you'd like to come along with us to help out in the lodge with our cold and tired and hungry students and NOT ski, we'd love to have you come along.
